grds

OTP Company planned, designed and developed grds’s global e-commerce website, translating the brand’s “Walk to Inspire” philosophy into product discovery and shopping experiences. We organized the sizing, material and care information needed by international customers unable to try on the shoes in person, and designed both a structure for moving freely between products and brand content and a foundation for the team to manage that experience over time.
Purpose. A Digital Walk Where Shopping Meets Discovery.
As grds’s international customer base grew, it needed an e-commerce experience that would guide customers from their first encounter with the brand through understanding its products to making a purchase. Without being able to try on the shoes or touch the materials, customers needed specific information about shape, fit, sizing and material characteristics. Shipping, exchanges and returns also needed to be clearly explained, allowing customers to understand and assess the products’ quality and price for themselves. At the same time, the experience needed to make the brand’s “Walk to Inspire” philosophy intuitively felt. We sought to create a space for personal discovery, both for customers looking to find a product quickly and for those browsing the brand’s stories and imagery without a particular destination. OTP Company began with a question: “How can purposeful shopping and browsing without a destination coexist in one space?” By bringing together clear information for choosing a product and the pleasure of encountering an unexpected story, we set out to create a digital walk that connects exploration naturally with shopping.

People. Starting with the Questions of Customers Who Cannot Try the Shoes On.
Through an initial questionnaire and working discussions with the grds team, OTP Company clarified the product values to communicate to international customers and the difficulties they could face when purchasing. Customer inquiries and operational experience shared by the team highlighted questions around sizing, material quality, shipping costs, duties, exchanges and returns. Footwear in particular required more than a size label: fit depends on foot width, instep height and the shape of the last. We also reconsidered the brand’s stories about manufacturing and materials from the customer’s perspective. Beyond explaining how a product is made, it was important to help customers understand what those characteristics mean for fit and use, and how to care for the shoes so they can be worn for years. This connected the brand’s explanations with information of practical value to customers. We considered both an interest in specific products and a desire to explore the brand. Customers searching for a particular pair, existing grds followers and international visitors encountering the brand for the first time all needed room to browse at their own pace. With the operations team, we defined how product information and content would be entered and connected, designing the customer-facing experience alongside the everyday work required to maintain it.

Practice. Connecting Product Understanding with Open-Ended Discovery.
OTP Company established “Walk to Inspire” as the guiding principle for the e-commerce experience. Drawing on the act of walking, observing one’s surroundings and encountering unexpected scenes, we designed paths for both finding products quickly and exploring brand content freely. We defined distinct roles for Shop, Journal, Collection and How We Make It, connecting related articles and products so that one interest could lead to another discovery. Product detail pages addressed sizing, materials and care in depth. We separated standard sizing, foot length and last information explaining the shape and fit of the shoes, allowing each product to be linked to the relevant details. Materials were introduced through component-specific descriptions and imagery, with links to related material stories and care guidance. Color swatches also connected different colors of the same product, helping customers move from understanding and comparison to a choice. The visual design balanced the clarity needed to read product information with the space to spend time with a story. Sans-serif and serif typefaces were combined according to the nature of the information, with distinct hierarchies for imagery, body text, questions and captions. For Journal and How We Make It, we developed editorial formats for different image positions and sizes, slideshows and captions, allowing the brand’s sensibility to emerge through the rhythm of reading text and images. The homepage was designed to bring imagery, introductory text and links together. Each scene introducing a product or collection could lead to further exploration, while the content and arrangement could vary by market. We also enabled the team to manage phrases extending from “Walk to Inspire,” allowing the brand’s language to connect the experience throughout the website. In the Shopify implementation, we structured metadata so that recurring information would not need to be entered separately on every page. Sizing, last, material and care information could be linked to individual products, while care guidance could be shared between product detail pages and the Care page. An operations guide documented product entry, content editing, related-product links and market-specific homepage settings, helping the team preserve the intended experience as new products and stories were added.
Shop, Journal, Collection, How We Make It의 역할을 구분하고, 관련 게시물과 제품을 연결해 하나의 관심이 다른 발견으로 이어지도록 했습니다.

Possibilities. From Choosing a Product to Finding Inspiration in Everyday Life.
The grds global e-commerce website brought product discovery, purchase information and brand content together. Structures for connecting sizing, last, material and care information, alongside editorial formats and an operations guide, established a foundation for continually introducing products and stories. The project was conceived to give customers the information needed to judge which shoes are right for them while also encountering the brand’s thinking and new stories along the way. We intended for an interest in a product’s materials to lead to curiosity about how it is made, and for reading one story to open a path to other products and collections. We hope the experience respects different paces—whether customers move directly toward the products they need or pause to explore. Small discoveries made on-screen can then continue into everyday life through the act of putting on a pair of shoes and walking, allowing grds’s “Walk to Inspire” to be interpreted through individual experiences beyond the moment of purchase.
